Reception Theory

  Reception Theory 1. The preferred reading of a media text is that it can get the audience to feel a certain way and be influenced by their reading so that they can carry out their message by using codes and conventions. 2. The Oppositional reading of a media text is that it is going against what the producers are creating it does not give the positive message that it wants and can put the audience in a difficult position as if they should change their view or not. 3. The Harry Brown trailer wants the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film to think that the kids are misbehaving which leads them to commit bad things such as crime, and drugs because of the influences around them and around their environment. Audience Effects Theory 1. The definition of passive audience is the view that the audiences passively take in information from the media and that these messages have the same effect on everyone. 2. The definition of active audience is that it is a more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with and make conscious choices regarding the media they consume. 3. Hypodermic Needle Theory is the suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the intended message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds.  This assumes no individual difference in audience members.  4. Demographics and Psychographics  1. What information do media companies use to create a demographic profile of their audience? The information that Media companies use to create a demographic profile of their audience is  Age- How old they are the age group if they are targeting young people or adults. Gender by finding out what best suits them. Education- If they are in school/college or university helping us know this makes it more quicker Social class- Social class refers to the groups that they are categorized which is all of these examples listed down. These are often categorized such as lower class, working class, middle class, and upper class. Race/ethnicity- Race and ethnicity help us know about the person more so that we are able to find the best movie for that specific race and country.
