Reception Theory

 Reception Theory

1. The preferred reading of a media text is that it can get the audience to feel a certain way and be influenced by their reading so that they can carry out their message by using codes and conventions.

2. The Oppositional reading of a media text is that it is going against what the producers are creating it does not give the positive message that it wants and can put the audience in a difficult position as if they should change their view or not.

3. The Harry Brown trailer wants the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film to think that the kids are misbehaving which leads them to commit bad things such as crime, and drugs because of the influences around them and around their environment. For example, if they have a friend that they look up to they may want to impress them by doing the same thing to fit in and also around the environment also impacts it since if they see something familiar at home they would think that this is normal expectations so it is okay to do these bad things. The audience will also think that the kids love rebelling and disobeying their parents and that teenagers are mostly involved in getting into crime. violence and being in gangs.

4. Young people may reject this and have an oppositional reading on the audience because they may not agree that young teenagers are into crime, violence, and being in gangs and that these stereotypes of young people are not right.

Mcdonald Big Mac advertisement Write 150 analysis

The preferred reading of the McDonald's advertising introducing the Big Mac from Mcdonalds is because when they described the Big Mac as a "meal designed as a sandwich" this makes the audience feel more eager to get it that it will fill them up. The Big Mac also links to the McDonald`s brand showing us that the meal is enjoyable and worth the money to buy. Supporters of fast food at McDonald`s might be interested in buying the food and enjoying the meal that is packaged as a sandwich. A negotiated reading is that it is delicious but not that healthy if we keep having it, especially for younger kids who like to get something out of their meal like a toy as kids prefer mostly Happy meal. The oppositional reading of this advert is that the company does not want you to think of it that much. This is because the burger looks mouthwatering and too hard to resist that you just want to eat it but the audience would not see how hard it is for them to be able to eat it all. The company also does not want the audience to think that is unhealthy. This is because there are little bits of lettuce that it is not all unhealthy but it has too much oil in them.

  1. Good level of detail - Tip- you do not have to be so detailed that you talk about the oil in the lettuce! Always apply CLAMPS to look at mise-en-scene choices and their effects and then use specific details with media terminology e.g. The central images shows...
You are not really understanding oppositional - this is the reading where we would see what the company does not want us to think about e.g. it is junk food, fast food, not healthy, probably not as big as that in real life... You have said that oppositional is how hard it is to eat it all which is not right. Can you re-do this more clearly?
