Audience Effects Theory

Audience Effects Theory

1. The definition of passive audience is the view that the audiences passively take in information from the media and that these messages have the same effect on everyone.

2. The definition of active audience is that it is a more modern and generally accepted view that audiences interact with and make conscious choices regarding the media they consume.

3. Hypodermic Needle Theory is the suggestion that audiences are always passive and therefore take the intended message from the producer as if it was injected into their minds. This assumes no individual difference in audience members.

4. Information/Surveillance: The Times Newspaper
Why tells audiences important information about politics, the world, and more.
Personal identity
Why?- The audience can relate to anything that they see.
Diversion/Entertainment- Soap operas
Why?-Soap operas are intended to be interesting and make the viewers hooked into watching more and more. They often perform dramatic and emotional scenes that allow viewers to escape from their daily lives and connect them to a different world. The relationships, conflicts, and other events in soap operas provide a break from reality.
Relationships:
Why?- The audience will feel that they are not the only one experiencing the same thing so they will have someone to look up to as they will feel more connected to the character because of their experiences and so they can be able to relate with them more.

5. In The Blue Planet video the it offers pleasures that this clip offers to the audience are information/surveillance because this clip shows us the ocean and it teaches us more about nature how these sea creatures have impacted us and why they are important to our environment so we should take care of them properly. As the creatures had swam across the ocean they had danced like ballerinas across the sea. They shared diversity and entertainment, by making the clip look appealing to the audience and creating an eye-catching view when the audience watches this it creates a nature relaxing calming environment to be in. They share relationships by showing that they all get along well with each other and that the creatures look different to one another as they are not the same they get on well with each other and show the audience that they are friends. In addition, they used voyeuristic pleasure they showed us the ocean and what beautiful creatures are amongst us by giving us a bird's eye view of it closer. This makes the audience feel like there is this beautiful atmosphere about nature but in real life it is different. Also being used is Vicarious pleasures where they showed us the corals, and seaweed and also showed the animal point of view. Finally, The Blue Planet also used Voyeuristic pleasure to show us that it makes people feel more connected with the animals and interested in them more to see how they live and how they are feeling.
