Advertising and Marketing-Key Conventions

Part 1:Skittles advert analysis

1. What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.
  • The image of the Skittles shows us a rainbow that is made out of Skittles which connotates colourful, fun, and joy where it could be to create an engaging eye-catching advert for the audience to see.
  • The logo is in the center and is written in bold white text, that has connotations to make our audience feel more interested in buying the product, suggesting that Skittles is different from others and is carrying out a different message.
  • The background of the Skittles advert shows us that the product is floating in the sky which connotates that the product that each Skittle is a burst of a different flavor to try, that it is so good that it will make your mind go crazy as if the skittles are stuck in the air.
  • The slogan "Taste the rainbow" suggests to us that consuming Skittles offers a flavorful and diverse experience, much like the varied colors of a rainbow which impresses the audience.
  • The different types of colors that have been used are all rainbow. Red: Represents the bold and fruity flavor associated with red Skittles.Green: Represents the tangy and sour taste of green Skittles. Blue: Represents the cool and refreshing taste of blue Skittle.
2. What is the USP (unique selling point) for Skittles and how do you know? Does the advert use any of the persuasive techniques listed above?
The USP for Skittles is that it is the only fruity-flavored candy with a spicy kick and that it also comes in so many different flavors. Therefore people are more encouraged to buy their product because it is something that they have never tried out before.

Part 2: Advert research your own advert

1) An advert with a clear brand identity

2. An advert that uses shock tactics or a controversial idea

3. An advert that creates a strong emotional connection with the audience

Bonus-An advert that shows women or men in a way they don't normally appear
