  1. Who is the target audience for Doctor Who? Do you think it has changed since 1963?

The Target audience for Doctor Who is children, families, adults as well as science fiction fans. No it has not changed since 1963.


2.  What audience pleasures are offered by Doctor Who - An Unearthly Child? Apply Blumer and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas.


Personal Identity: Susan a character who is a young teenager girl but is rebelling against the rules by talking back to her grandad and also we may feel as if she is odd, smart.

Personal Relationships: The audience might wanna watch more to see how her relationships with the teacher ,doctor ,grandad has changed or has it not and what has happened next.

Diversion (Escapism): By going to other world/eras you can get a good look at how it is different compared to Earth such as being in the science fiction world vs now.

Surveillance (Information / Facts):The audience in 1963 will be interested in sci-fi as this is something completely different to them and would find it unusual that this is happening and that Susan is some sort of alien but in this normal school environment as a teenage girl who is smart but quite strange as she knows events that have not occurred yet but a long period of time ago.

Surveillance as they are interested in knowing what is gonna happen during the show

Voyeuristic pleasure because they are watching people e.g on cameras.

Doctor Who has a fandom where they have a Comic con meeting, get merch, watch podcasts, go to events, play games and also maybe even read books.

Industries

1) What was the television industry like in 1963? How many channels were there?
The US television industry is owned by three major networks BBC,CBS,ABC. The signal was not great so photo quality was not clear. There was only 3 channels.
2) How does An Unearthly Child reflect the level of technology in the TV industry in 1963?
The first episode of Doctor Who,aired in Black and White,reflecting the television technology in 1963 as colour TV was not available at that time.The episode was shot using a mini-camera in a studio.

3) Why is Doctor Who such an important franchise for the BBC? 
Doctor Who is such an important franchise for the BBC is because Doctor Who has a large fanbase that people are interested in and by finding out that the BBC is the one for the franchise of Doctor Who that keeps them hooked so they keep watching and getting curious.

4) What other programmes/spin-offs are part of the wider Doctor Who franchise?
The Sarah Jane Adventures that focuses more on younger audience and the adventures that they go on.

5) Why does the Doctor Who franchise have so much merchandise available? Give examples. 
So that there is a bit of everything that people can watch and choose from as maybe they want to find something suitable for their age group.
